Islamabad: The Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) has issued a plea to United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, highlighting the worsening political and human rights conditions in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

In a letter detailed by the Kashmir Media Service, DFP Acting Chairman Mehmood Ahmad Saghar outlined ongoing human rights violations in the region, such as extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and punitive measures against civilians by Indian forces.

Saghar expressed significant concerns regarding Indian government policies that he argues are aimed at demographic changes and marginalizing the region’s majority community. The letter criticized the use of repressive laws and judicial systems to stifle dissent.

The DFP contends that the actions of the ruling BJP government resemble settler colonialism and aim to erase the political identity of Kashmir. The party reiterated the Kashmiris’ long-standing demand for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions, which guarantee their right to self-determination through a plebiscite.

Saghar called on the United Nations to address the issue urgently and to facilitate a resolution to the Kashmir conflict in accordance with international law and the aspirations of the Kashmiri populace.

The letter to the UN Secretary General also highlighted the ongoing suppression of fundamental freedoms in the region, including restrictions on peaceful assembly and expression. It noted the detention of numerous Kashmiris, including politicians and activists, under sedition laws.

The DFP’s appeal underscores the need for international attention and intervention to address what it describes as a silent war against the people of Kashmir, advocating for a peaceful resolution aligned with the UNSC’s framework.
