Islamabad: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to implement its resolutions concerning the region of Jammu and Kashmir. In a letter addressed to the President of the UNSC, Dar expressed concern over the human rights situation in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

According to Radio Pakistan, the letter highlights issues such as arbitrary detentions, extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, torture, and restrictions on freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly. The letter also addresses the persistent use of stringent laws and the detention and persecution of Kashmiri political leaders, including Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Yasin Malik, and Asiya Andrabi, along with journalists, lawyers, human rights defenders, and civil society activists. It notes the continued restrictions on sixteen political organizations representing the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

The Deputy Prime Minister also pointed to the implications of India’s actions for regional peace and security. He warned that India’s posture, rhetoric, and the deployment of an estimated 700,000-900,000 security personnel in IIOJK, in addition to its decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, have intensified tensions and increased risks to peace in South Asia.
