New Delhi: In an unusual move that has drawn widespread criticism, Professor Pratyusha Vatsala, the principal of Lakshmibai College at Delhi University, has come under fire for applying cow dung on classroom walls in an attempt to mitigate the effects of rising summer temperatures.

The initiative was revealed when Professor Vatsala shared videos and images in a faculty WhatsApp group, describing the effort as a “desi solution” being tested in C Block, where heat complaints have been frequent. “Desi methods are being adopted to address complaints about the heat in C Block. Those who have classes here will soon receive these rooms in a new form,” she wrote.

The footage shows the principal standing on a chair, assisted by college staff, applying cow dung to the walls. The video quickly went viral and was met with strong backlash from students, educators, and the public. Critics highlighted the lack of basic amenities like fans, air conditioning, and coolers in many classrooms, along with ongoing washroom hygiene issues.

“This is not a rural cowshed. It’s a college campus under a central university,” a student commented. “We are expected to study and focus in this environment?”

Neelam, an Academic Council member and associate professor, questioned the decision’s legitimacy, emphasizing that infrastructure issues should be addressed through proper procedures and Council approval. Another faculty member, speaking anonymously, noted that while the heat is unbearable, modern infrastructure is needed rather than outdated methods.

The incident has renewed discussions about inadequate facilities in public educational institutions and the preference for unscientific methods over practical solutions, as reported by Kashmir Media Service.
