Chairman Senate Advocates for Regional Cooperation at Asia-Pacific Group Meeting


ARUSHA: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani took part in the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group meeting at the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Arusha, Tanzania. The meeting focused on significant issues affecting the Asia-Pacific region and discussed several key items on the Assembly’s agenda, such as vacancies, emergency items, and nominations for the Drafting Committee.



According to Senate of Pakistan, Chairman Gilani emphasized the importance of enhanced parliamentary collaboration among Asia-Pacific nations to tackle mutual challenges and advance shared interests. He stressed the necessity for unified parliamentary efforts to address regional issues, particularly the implications of climate change.



The participants reviewed a proposal to prioritize climate change and its effects as an emergency item, highlighting the increasing frequency of climate-related disasters and their impact on regional communities and economies. The discussions also covered topics related to the ASEAN+3 Group and other matters pertinent to the forthcoming Assembly proceedings.



Chairman Gilani was joined by members of Pakistan’s parliamentary delegation, including Senators Amir Waliuddin Chishti, Zarqa Suharwardy Taimur, Anusha Rahman Ahmad Khan, and Agha Shazaib Durrani, as well as MNAs Sharmila Farooqui, Pir Syed Fazal Jillani, Syed Hafeezuddin, and Barrister Aqeel Malik. The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the Asia-Pacific Group’s dedication to ongoing parliamentary dialogue, regional cooperation, and coordinated efforts to address common concerns.
