Dhaka: In response to mounting public outcry over Israel’s recent actions in the Gaza Strip, Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has reinstated a travel ban for its citizens to Israel. This move marks a significant policy reversal from 2021 when the Sheikh Hasina government had lifted the restriction.

The Bangladesh Home Ministry issued a directive to the passport and immigration department to restore the phrase “THIS PASSPORT IS VALID FOR ALL COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD EXCEPT ISRAEL” on Bangladeshi passports. This decision comes as Israel faces international criticism for its military operations in Gaza.

Nilima Afroze, Deputy Secretary of the Home Ministry’s Security Services Division, confirmed the issuance of the directive on April 7. She stated that the measure was taken to align with the country’s foreign policy stance amid ongoing tensions.

Previously, Bangladeshi passports included a clause prohibiting travel to Israel, but it was removed under the administration of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The reinstatement of the clause reflects the current government’s position on the matter.

Former foreign minister AK Abdul Momen had emphasized the legal consequences for any Bangladeshi citizen attempting to visit Israel, underscoring the government’s firm stance on the issue.
