Amnesty International Denounces Unlawful Demolitions Targeting Muslims in India

New Delhi, Amnesty International has urgently called for an end to the “unlawful demolitions” of homes, businesses, and places of worship belonging to Muslims in India, deeming such actions as unjust and discriminatory. The human rights organization highlighted the use of JCB bulldozers in these demolitions, which have been documented across at least five states, as part of what it describes as a campaign of hate against the Muslim minority.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Amnesty International’s concerns are detailed in two reports, “If you speak up, your house will be demolished: Bulldozer Injustice in India” and “Unearthing Accountability: JCB’s Role and Responsibility in Bulldozer Injustice in India.” These publications outline the punitive nature of property demolitions targeting Muslims, indicating a de-facto policy of using such tactics as a form of extra-judicial punishment.

The organization has called upon both the central and state governments in India to immediately cease these demolitions and to ensure that no individual is rendered homeless through forced evictions. Furthermore, Amnesty International emphasizes the necessity for adequate compensation for those affected by such actions and for the accountability of those responsible for these rights violations.

Agnès Callamard, the secretary general of Amnesty International, expressed grave concern over the situation, stating, “The unlawful demolition of Muslim properties by the Indian authorities, peddled as ‘bulldozer justice’ by political leaders and media, is cruel and appalling.” She highlighted the discriminatory nature of these demolitions, pointing out the severe impact on families and the broader implications for justice and equality in India.

This call to action from Amnesty International underscores a critical human rights issue within India, demanding immediate attention and rectification from the government to halt the practice of demolishing Muslim properties without due process, and to address the broader context of discrimination and injustice faced by minority communities in the country.
