Acting President of Pakistan Calls for Enhanced Worker Rights on International Labour Day

ISLAMABAD: Acting President of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gilani, highlighted the significance of International Labour Day in his message, stating that May 1 is a potent symbol of labor rights, human dignity, and the global commitment to social justice. The day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by laborers in their pursuit of fundamental rights and is observed worldwide as an expression of worker solidarity.

According to Senate of Pakistan, Gilani noted the historical importance of May 1, rooted in the Haymarket incident in Chicago, where workers protested for an eight-hour workday. The events that transpired during this movement shifted the direction of labor rights struggles globally, establishing May 1 as International Labour Day.

The Acting President emphasized the essential role of the working class in national development, economic stability, and sustainable prosperity, describing workers as the backbone of any economy. He stressed that progress is unattainable without addressing workers’ welfare and well-being.

Gilani further highlighted the emphasis placed by both Islam and the Constitution of Pakistan on respecting workers, safeguarding their rights, and ensuring social justice. He asserted that it is the state’s responsibility to provide dignified employment, fair wages, social protection, and a safe working environment.

He also recognized Parliament’s continuous efforts to protect workers’ rights through legislation and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting labor-friendly laws, better wages, social security, and workplace safety.

The Acting President expressed his resolve to pursue further legislative measures, institutional reforms, and strengthening of social protection systems to provide sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by workers. He paid tribute to overseas Pakistani workers for their significant contributions to the national economy through remittances and assured that their rights remain a government priority.

In his concluding remarks, Gilani emphasized that International Labour Day offers an opportunity to honor workers’ services, acknowledge their struggles, and express solidarity. He stated that the current global economic challenges amplify the day’s importance and reaffirmed that the Pakistan Peoples Party and Parliament will continue efforts to uphold workers’ rights, promote social justice, and strive for a fair and equitable society.
