Resolution of Kashmir Dispute Essential for South Asia’s Peace, Say Experts

Srinagar: A resolution in line with United Nations mandates is crucial for peace in South Asia. They argue that without settling this issue, the region remains highly militarized and prone to conflict, posing a significant risk not only to local stability but also to international security.

According to Kashmir Media Service, experts, who chose to be identified only by their first names during media interviews, have highlighted the dangerous levels of militarization and nuclearization in Kashmir, describing the situation as a “ticking time bomb.” They stressed that the international community needs to exert pressure on India to adhere to relevant UN resolutions to resolve the dispute.

Dr. Sultan, a renowned political analyst, emphasized the need for global intervention. “The international community must pressurize India to resolve the dispute as per relevant UN resolutions,” he stated. The urgency of the matter has escalated since August 2019, marked by an increase in extrajudicial killings of Kashmiris through fake encounters and so-called cordon and search operations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Dr. Yaqoob, a professor of international relations, criticized the longstanding impediments posed by India. “India has been impeding the way for over seven decades for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute,” he said. “The UN is duty-bound to secure the implementation of its resolutions on Kashmir.”

The discussions also touched on the accountability of Indian leadership regarding their actions in Kashmir. Dr. Kaul, a Kashmiri activist, called for serious measures against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his administration for their alleged war crimes. “It is time to bring Modi and his henchmen to book for their war crimes against Kashmiris,” Dr. Kaul asserted. He urged world powers to honor their commitments concerning the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.

The experts collectively urged the UN to intensify its efforts to resolve the Kashmir dispute promptly, underscoring that peace in South Asia hinges on the settlement of this issue.
