Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari visited Shanghai Electric’s facilities in Shanghai on September 15, 2025, and observed the signing of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement focuses on establishing a coal gasification facility in Thar, Sindh, marking the first such project using Thar coal for both energy production and agricultural support. Accompanying the President were First Lady Bibi Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and Senator Saleem Mandviwalla.
Shanghai Electric Chairman Wu Lei briefed the Pakistani delegation on the firm’s various ventures in Pakistan, spanning Thar coal, nuclear power, and coal-fired plants. President Zardari expressed gratitude for the corporation’s contributions to Pakistan’s energy sector, job creation, and socio-economic progress. He emphasized the significance of the Thar coal project, particularly its potential for coal gasification. Zardari also encouraged Shanghai Electric to consider further investments in upgrading Pakistan’s power transmission infrastructure.
He assured the firm of amicable resolution to any outstanding concerns in a spirit of mutual cooperation. The company’s CEO appreciated the security provided to their staff in Pakistan. President Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to strengthening security measures for Chinese personnel.
The President received a briefing on Shanghai Electric’s background and accomplishments, including its 1902 founding and current status as a major equipment manufacturer. The MoU for the Thar coal gasification plant was signed by MFTC Coal Gasification and Manufacturing (Pvt) Ltd CEO Shahid Tawawalla and Sino Sindh Resources (Private) Ltd / Shanghai Electric CEO Lin Jigen. This groundbreaking project aims to address Pakistan’s energy requirements and bolster the agricultural sector.
Also in attendance were Sindh Information and Transport Minister Sharjeel Memon, Sindh P and D and Energy Minister Syed Nasir Shah, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong, and Pakistani Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi.
