Youth Lead the Charge in Urban Climate Action, Says United Nations

New York: On World Cities Day, the United Nations has highlighted the critical role of young people in advancing climate action and shaping the future of urban areas.

According to United Nations Pakistan, cities, home to more than half of the global population and responsible for 70 percent of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions, are central to the climate crisis. The organization emphasized the importance of harnessing the energy and vision of youth in driving change in urban settings.

Young people across the globe are actively participating in initiatives ranging from grassroots movements to innovation labs. They are advocating for the integration of renewable energy, the creation of green jobs, the development of clean public transportation systems, and the implementation of climate adaptation measures. These efforts are instrumental in building sustainable cities where all residents can thrive.

The United Nations called for greater amplification of young voices, increased investment in their ideas, and enhanced participation in urban decision-making processes. Empowering young people is viewed as a vital step in accelerating climate action and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

As World Cities Day is observed, the United Nations encourages the global community to recognize and celebrate the contributions of youth in creating green, resilient, and inclusive urban environments that meet the needs of future generations.
