Islamabad: The Young Parliamentarians Forum (YPF) of the National Assembly of Pakistan held a significant two-day workshop focusing on Post-Legislative Scrutiny (PLS). The event, organized in partnership with the Shaoor Foundation for Education and Awareness (SFEA), brought together lawmakers, journalists, and civil society members to discuss the importance of reviewing laws post-enactment.
Led by President Syeda Nosheen Iftikhar, MNA, the workshop highlighted the critical role of young parliamentarians in advocating for the rights of marginalized groups. Iftikhar emphasized the necessity for collaboration among young lawmakers to modernize legislation and proposed forming issue-specific working groups to draft reforms within three months.
Special Secretary Syed Shamoon Hashmi highlighted historical legislative milestones and underscored the National Assembly’s role in shaping laws that protect fundamental rights. He stressed the importance of securing freedoms for future generations and called for inclusive educational policies and youth empowerment programs.
Parliamentary Expert Mr. Zafarullah Khan spoke on evaluating laws through a human rights lens to ensure fairness. He discussed the evolution of Pakistan’s legal system and emphasized the need for reforms addressing climate change, child protection, and senior citizens’ rights.
An interactive session titled “Media and Parliament United for Human Rights and Democratic Progress” saw calls for concrete legislative reforms. The panel advocated for post-legislative scrutiny committees and enhanced collaboration between lawmakers, media, and civil society to ensure inclusive and effective decision-making.
The workshop was attended by several Members of the National Assembly, including Nawabzada Mir Jamal Khan Raisani, Mr. Muhammad Mobeen Arif, and others, highlighting the collective effort to ensure laws remain relevant and effectively implemented.
