World Obesity Day Focuses on Youth and ChangeElection Commission of Pakistan Denies Sunni Ittehad Council’s Request for Reserved Seats

Islamabad, World Obesity Day is being observed in Pakistan today, aligning with global efforts to address and raise awareness about obesity. This year’s theme, “Obesity and Youth: Young people catalyzing change,” aims to highlight the critical role young people play in driving transformations in public health, particularly regarding obesity.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the observance seeks to draw attention to the growing concern of obesity among youth and the importance of mobilizing this demographic in the fight against the condition. By focusing on young people, the theme underscores the potential for positive change that can be achieved through their active participation in creating healthier communities.

The day serves as a reminder of the challenges obesity poses to health systems worldwide and the need for concerted efforts to combat these issues. It emphasizes the importance of education, preventive measures, and the empowerment of youth as agents of change in the battle against obesity.

Islamabad, The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has dismissed a petition by the Sunni Ittehad Council that sought the allocation of reserved seats in the National and Provincial Assemblies. The decision, made by a 4-1 majority, was based on the council’s failure to submit its priority lists in a timely manner, a crucial step required for the allotment of seats reserved for women and non-Muslims.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the ECP’s ruling emphasizes the importance of adhering to procedural timelines for political parties wishing to secure reserved seats in the legislative bodies. The inability of the Sunni Ittehad Council to meet these deadlines resulted in the denial of their request, underscoring the electoral body’s commitment to enforcing regulations and maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.

This decision highlights the procedural challenges faced by political parties in navigating the electoral landscape, as well as the ECP’s role in ensuring compliance with established rules and guidelines.
