A significant proportion of these victims are children, with nearly a quarter being under the age of five. The theme for the 2026 observance, “Unite to turn the tide,” calls for a collective effort to tackle this pressing issue.

According to Radio Pakistan, drowning is one of the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5 to 14 years worldwide. The observance of World Drowning Prevention Day aims to raise awareness and promote preventive measures to reduce these fatalities.
