Women Parliamentary Caucus, in collaboration with Women Political Leaders, hosted a National Transformative Dialogue in which the need for the concept of a ‘Living Wage’ was comprehensively advocated

Islamabad, August 07, 2023 (PPI-OT): Women’s Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) of the National Assembly hosted a National Transformative Dialogue on Living Wages and Income in collaboration with Women Political Leaders (WPL) at Parliament House, Islamabad. The event was attended by Honourable Parliamentarians, representatives of Chambers of Commerce, Civil Society members and national and international Non-Governmental Officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest and Honourable Federal Minister for Commerce Syed Naveed Qamar stated that women empowerment is synonymous to nation empowerment. He also emphasized that we should take heed from regional countries that encourage women empowerment to strengthen their economic standing in the world.

Hon’ble Senator Saleem Mandviwala as the Keynote Speaker stated that women are entitled to have same recognition in terms of salary and wages as their male counterparts. He further mentioned that women are 30% of the total workforce of Pakistan and can perform better than men in every sphere of life.

Secretary Women’s Parliamentary Caucus Hon’ble Dr. Shahida Rehmani while greeting the distinguished guests stated that the dialogue aims to bring together political leaders, senior experts, and key stakeholders to provide a platform where the exchange of ideas, guidance and future strategies may take place. Furthermore, she informed that the aim of this Roundtable is to advocate for the need and purpose of a ‘Living Wage’, so that a suitable minimum wage can be decided and agreed upon, which in turn will enable the individuals especially women to fully participate in the economy. She also presented Annual Progress Report of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus to the Parliamentarians and esteemed participants.

The dialogue was also joined via Zoom Video call by Ms. Safak Pavey, a senior board member of Women Political Leaders. She appreciated the efforts of Women’s Parliamentary Caucus of National Assembly under the leadership of Hon’ble Secretary WPC Dr. Shahida Rehmani. She reiterated on the need to undertake joint ventures for the socio-economic betterment of Women in the region. Other Honorable Parliamentarians including Ms. Nuzhat Pathan, Ms. Naz Baloch, Ms. Shaista Pervez Malik, Ms. Shahida Akhter Ali, Ms. Kishwar Zehra and Ms. Farukh Khan also shared their invaluable views to improve the socio-economic status of women in the society.
