Islamabad, September 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):Deputy Speaker National Assembly Zahid Akram Durrani has said that during the recent disastrous floods, Pakistan had to face massive loss of lives and property. He said that during the floods, the first priority of the government was to rescue the people who were severely stuck in the flood water and to shift them to safe places, for which all Government’s institutions of took active part under the supervision of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif.
He expressed these views during his meeting with World Health Organization (WHO) Country Head for Pakistan Dr. Palitha Gunarathna Mahipala who called on him at Parliament House, today.
Deputy Speaker also remarked that the flood water is still standing in the Sindh, Balochistan and southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which might cause the spread of Malaria, Dengue, Cholera and other diseases, which could be a precursor to another human tragedy.
He said that the federal government is taking vigorous measures to provide health facilities in these areas with the cooperation of friendly countries, WHO and other welfare organizations, but more coordinated and joint efforts are needed for the complete prevention of various water borne diseases in the flood-affected areas.
Referring to lack of health facilities in southern districts, Deputy Speaker said that Bannu district is the center of southern districts in KPK and inhabitants of other districts also use Bannu hospitals, besides people of bannu for treatment. He said that there are three big hospitals in Bannu which includes Khalifa Gul Nawaz Memorial Hospital Bannu, Women Hospital Bannu and District Headquarters Hospital Bannu.
He said that polio, Corona and other vaccines for southern districts are also stored in these hospitals ⁷however, due to load shedding, not only the patients in these hospitals face problems but the stored vaccines are also wasted. He sought for cooperation of WHO to convert electricity systems of these hospitals into solar power and provision of basic medical facilities.
He appreciated the role of WHO for providing medical facilities to the victims during the flood.
Dr. Palitha Gunarathna Mahipala, Country Head for Pakistan of the World Health Organization expressed deep sorrow and grief over the loss of lives and property during the floods and informed about the measures taken by the WHO for provision health facilities in the flood affected areas. He assured all possible support to convert the hospitals of Bannu to solar energy and provide other basic health facilities to eliminate the sufferings of patients.
