Weather Alert: Landslides and Increased Water Flows Anticipated in Several Areas

Islamabad, 16 Oct 2023: The National Weather Forecasting Centre (NWFC) has issued a warning indicating potential landslides and increased water flows in local streams in various regions including Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Mansehra, and Abbottabad. These weather disturbances are expected to commence from Monday evening and continue into Tuesday morning.

The current synoptic situation highlights that a westerly wave is affecting the upper and central parts of the country and is anticipated to persist until tomorrow. For Monday, rain-wind thunderstorms are predicted for regions such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Potohar, northeast/south Punjab, upper Sindh, northeast/south Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir. Additionally, snowfall over higher terrains and isolated hailstorms in plain areas are forecasted, with heavy rainfall expected in specific places.

By Tuesday, most upper parts of the country are likely to experience partly cloudy weather with a rain-wind/thunderstorm. Snowfall is also expected over elevated terrains in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Islamabad, Potohar region, and northeast Punjab.

Reviewing the past 24-hour weather conditions, rain-wind/thunderstorms were observed in regions like Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, northeast Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Rainfall data from various stations includes Kashmir (Muzaffarabad City with 62mm), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Malam Jabba recording 48mm), Punjab (Sargodha at 42mm), and Balochistan (Lasbella at 28mm). The lowest recorded temperatures for the day were marked at Leh with -01°C and Kalam with 02°C.
