Washington Endorses Dialogue Between India and Pakistan on Kashmir

Washington, In a statement that underscores the U.S. government’s stance on South Asian geopolitics, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller conveyed the United States’ support for constructive dialogue between India and Pakistan, particularly on the contentious issue of Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, during a press briefing, Miller responded to inquiries about the U.S.’s position on potential talks between India and Pakistan, following a gesture of goodwill from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Pakistan’s newly elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Miller emphasized the significance of Modi’s congratulatory message to Sharif amid ongoing tensions, noting it as a positive step towards dialogue.

“The United States values its relationship with both India and Pakistan, and we want to see them have a productive and peaceful relationship,” Miller stated. He further expressed the U.S. welcome for any productive and peaceful discussions between the two nations regarding their disputes, including the long-standing Kashmir issue. However, he clarified that the “pace, scope, and character” of such talks would be determined by the two countries involved.

This statement comes at a time when relations between India and Pakistan remain fraught with historical and political complexities. Modi’s congratulatory note to Sharif for assuming the role of Pakistan’s 24th premier has been viewed as a potentially significant moment for future bilateral engagements.
