Waqf Act Sparks Controversy as Historic Mazar Demolished in Dehradun

Dehradun: The ongoing implementation of the Waqf Act has led to the demolition of a historic mazar in Dehradun, the second such incident in Uttarakhand in a week. The action highlights the tensions surrounding the management of Muslim properties under the act.

In the early hours of the morning, a joint team consisting of officials from the Revenue Department, Municipal Corporation, Public Works Department, and the hospital administration dismantled the shrine dedicated to the Sufi saint Baba Kamaal Shah.

Dehradun Municipal Commissioner Namami Bansal reported that the demolition was prompted by a complaint received through the Chief Minister’s helpline. The Doon Medical College had previously raised issues concerning the structure’s presence on its premises.

“The administration was approached by the medical college, leading to the involvement of the revenue department, which facilitated the removal,” Bansal stated.

Dr. Ravindra Bisht, Additional Director of the Directorate of Medical Education, noted that an investigation was initiated four months ago following a complaint from a local resident.

The demolition has stirred controversy among local residents, who argue that the mazar was a registered Waqf property. They claim that the act contravened guidelines set by the Indian Supreme Court concerning Waqf land management. Waqf Board Chairman Shadab Shams confirmed the shrine’s registration with the board.
