Karachi: Chairman of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd), conducted an inspection of the K-IV water supply project, aimed at bolstering Karachi’s water infrastructure. The visit included reviews of construction sites such as intake works, pumping stations, and pipelines, with the project currently 46% complete and Phase I set for a December 2025 completion.
According to Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority, the Chairman was briefed on the progress by General Manager (Projects) South and Project Director Amir Mughal, who outlined the contract-wise advancements and financial status. The project, with an approved budget of Rs. 126 billion for Phase I, has already seen an expenditure of Rs. 59.5 billion. Timely fund provision remains crucial for adhering to the planned completion timeline.
The Chairman emphasized the critical importance of the K-IV project for addressing Karachi’s water needs and instructed the project team to accelerate construction efforts to meet the scheduled completion date. He also directed enhanced coordination with stakeholders such as the Government of Sindh and Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation for necessary power supplies and water system upgrades.
The K-IV project, drawing water from Keenjhar Lake, is designed to deliver 650 million gallons per day to Karachi upon full completion of its two phases. The ongoing Phase I will contribute 260 million gallons per day, with the future Phase II expected to add an additional 390 million gallons per day.
