New Delhi, July 18, 2022 (PPI-OT): Voting for the Indian presidential election in which Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Droupadi Murmu is pitted against joint opposition pick Yashwant Sinha began on Monday (today).
Polling began at 10 am and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to cast his vote. The voting process would conclude at 5 pm.
Nearly 4,800 elected MPs and MLAs are entitled to vote in the 15th presidential election, but nominated MPs and MLAs, and members of Legislative Councils are not.
Besides Room number 63 on the first floor of Indian Parliament House, which has been converted into a polling station, voting is simultaneously taking place at various assemblies of Indian states.
Meanwhile, all 5 Members of Indian Parliament from IIOJK will cast their vote in New Delhi as no Polling Station has been set up in the territory for today’s election for the President of India mainly because there is no Legislative Assembly.
While 3 National Conference (NC) MPs including Farooq Abdullah, Mohammad Akbar Lone and Hasnain Masoodi have announced that they will vote for joint Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, BJP MPs including Jitendra Singh and Jugal Kishore Sharma will be voting for the party nominee Droupadi Murmu.
The counting of votes will take place at the Indian Parliament House on July 21 and the next President will take oath on July 25.
