Uttarakhand Forest Fires May Hasten Himalayan Glacier Melt, Warn Experts

New Delhi, As forest fires continue to ravage over 1,140 hectares in Uttarakhand since November 2023, experts are raising alarms about the potential accelerated melting of Himalayan glaciers due to the fires.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the fires are contributing to an increase in black carbon emissions, a pollutant known for its heat and light absorption properties, which significantly accelerates the melting process of glaciers. This situation is exacerbated by what experts criticize as the Indian government’s insufficient response to climate change and forest conservation. They emphasize the importance of protecting the vegetation surrounding glaciers to mitigate further glacial melt.

Additionally, the World Meteorological Organization has issued warnings about the increased risks of glacial lake outburst floods due to the rapid retreat of glaciers in the Himalayas, a direct consequence of environmental degradation and climate change impacts.
