US Diplomat and Pakistan’s Power Minister Discuss Energy Sector Reforms


Islamabad: The US Charge D’Affaires in Pakistan, Natalie A. Baker, met with Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, the Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division), to discuss recent reforms in Pakistan’s power sector and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation. During the meeting, Ms. Baker extended an invitation to Minister Leghari for an upcoming Energy Security Dialogue in Washington, emphasizing the significance of his participation.



According to a statement by Press Information Department, Minister Leghari highlighted the government’s recent initiatives aimed at improving the power sector, including appointing independent boards of directors for state-owned enterprises to ensure merit-based decision-making. The minister acknowledged the strategic partnership with US agencies, stating that it has significantly contributed to strengthening bilateral relations in the energy sector.



Minister Leghari also addressed ongoing efforts to privatize distribution companies, assuring that the process adheres to international standards and is designed to attract foreign investors. He invited US investors to participate in the competitive bidding process, emphasizing transparency and fairness.



Ms. Baker praised the efforts of Pakistan’s Power Division in reducing electricity tariffs and expressed commitment to working collaboratively to explore new areas of cooperation in the energy sector.
