US Congressman assures to do his part for release of Khurram Parvez

Washington, December 30, 2021 (PPI-OT):Chairman, US House Foreign Affairs Committee Congressman, Gregory Meeks, has assured the representatives of Kashmiri diaspora that he will do his part for the release of human rights activist Khurram Parvez, currently detained in a New Delhi’s jail.

Several members of the Kashmiri diaspora met Congressman Meeks at the residence of Dr Asif Mahmood, a popular democratic leader, in Los Angeles on Wednesday, a statement issued by the diaspora said. During the meeting, the diaspora discussed about the ongoing human rights violations and threats to Journalists and activists in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Gregory Meeks is also looking into a “Full committee” hearing on Human Rights violations in Kashmir. In October 2019, the Asia Subcommittee had held a hearing on Kashmir during which several members of US Congress had expressed concern over human rights violations in IIOJK.

Congressman Meeks said, the House Foreign Affairs Committee is dedicated to fight for human rights and quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”, so he will continue to fight for human rights.”

US Congressman Gregory W. Meeks is a senior Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He was elected to chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee in 2020, making him the first African-American Chair in the committee’s history.

In November, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested prominent human rights activist Khurram Parvez after raiding his residence and office in Srinagar. Parvez has been booked under the black law Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and other multiple charges.
