UP Police brutality: Muslim woman shot dead for resisting son’s detention

New Delhi, May 17, 2022 (PPI-OT):A woman was shot dead by police when she tried to resist illegal arrest of her son on charges of cow slaughter in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. A police team raided Abdul Rehman’s house at Islamnagar village in Sidhharthnagar district in Uttar Pradesh to arrest him on the charge of cow slaughter when preparations were on for the wedding of his sister. As his mother, 53-year-old Muslim Roshni, resisted his illegal detention, the police party opened fire resulting in her death due to bullet injury.

According to Atifur Rehman, another son of the deceased, 15-20 police officers who raided their house with a special operations group to take his brother Abdul Rehman into custody, didn’t give any reason for his detention. As his mother resisted the police one of the cops suddenly opened fire killing her on the spot.

Soon after, as the villagers gathered to protest the incidents, the cops fled the spot along with both brothers, Atiqur Rehman and Abdul Rehman. Their sister Rabia’s marriage is scheduled for May 22. Losing her mother and arrest of both her brothers is too much to bear for Rabia. Following an outrage over the police brutality, an FIR has been lodged by Sidhharthnagar police on, on a complaint of the son of the Roshni, against unidentified policemen on charges of murder.

According to the complaint, the police personnel threatened to shoot before opening fire at Roshni. The body of the deceased was handed over to the family members after post-mortem. “There was a bullet injury mark as the bullet passed through her body. I am yet to go through the post-mortem report,” Sidhharthnagar circle officer Pradeep Kumar Yadav told media.
