UP Police Arrest Shahi Jama Masjid Chief Amid Protests

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Police have detained Zafar Ali, the Chief of Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, following his alleged involvement in the 2024 protests concerning the mosque’s survey, which reportedly spiraled into violence.

Prior to his formal arrest, Ali was taken into custody by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to document his statement, as reported by Kashmir Media Service.

Authorities state that Ali was among the first to learn about the official survey planned in Sambhal. It is alleged that he played a role in mobilizing local Muslims for a protest on November 19, 2024, which, according to police, escalated into unrest and violence.

Ali’s elder brother, Advocate Mohammad Tahir, claimed that the timing of the arrest was strategically planned to prevent Ali from testifying before a commission the next day. Despite this, Tahir expressed confidence in Ali’s willingness to disclose the truth, referencing a previous press conference where Ali had spoken out.

Advocate Shakeel Ahmad, associated with the case, labeled the arrest as illegal and indicated plans to seek bail post Ali’s medical examination. He expressed optimism regarding Ali’s imminent release.
