Unnerved by Khalistan movement, Modi goes after Canada’s Justin Trudeau for help

New Delhi, September 11, 2023 (PPI-OT): Growing popularity of Khalistan movement for a separate homeland for Sikhs on the soil of India among community members at home and abroad, has unnerved India so much so that Prime Minister Narendra Modi lodged a complaint with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi about what he called anti-India activities in Canada.

Modi expressed his deep concerns to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the gaining ground of the Sikh movement in his country.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in a statement in New Delhi said, “Prime Minister Modi conveyed our strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada. They are promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats, damaging diplomatic premises, and threatening the Indian community in Canada and their places of worship.”

It is worth mentioning here that Canada has always rejected the Indian allegations against Canadian Sikhs arguing that all Canadian nationals including the Sikh community members have freedom of expression in democratic Canada.

At the concluding ceremony of G20 Summit in New Delhi, when questioned about Khalistan movement and “foreign interference”, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made it clear that “Canada will always uphold the freedom of peaceful protest, expression, and conscience”.
