Islamabad: The Universal Service Fund (USF) hosted a “Breast Cancer Awareness Walk” at Fatima Jinnah Park on Thursday, highlighting the critical importance of early detection and open communication about the disease. The event, attended by a diverse group of participants including government officials, healthcare professionals, and local women, emphasized proactive health measures and public education to combat breast cancer in Pakistan.
According to Universal Service Funds, Chaudhry Mudassar Naveed, CEO of USF, stressed the need for increased public awareness and early detection strategies. He highlighted USF’s commitment to supporting government and organizational efforts to address breast cancer, underscoring the theme “Protecting Women, Preserving Generations.” The walk aimed to raise awareness of breast cancer symptoms, promote early detection and treatment, and foster a healthier, more informed community.
Joint Secretary MoITT, Ms. Saima Ahad, called for mothers to discuss breast cancer with their daughters and advocated for regular medical check-ups due to the disease’s hereditary nature. She also emphasized the role of media in educating women, particularly in rural areas, about the importance of regular self-examinations and professional screenings.
Renowned Oncologist Dr. Muhammad Farrukh provided medical insights, stating that breast cancer is curable if detected early. He recommended monthly self-examinations and yearly professional screenings starting at an early age, while also pointing out the socio-cultural challenges such as stigmatization and the sensitivity surrounding the issue that hinder timely treatment for many women.
The event not only served as a platform for raising awareness but also highlighted the ongoing initiatives by USF to bridge the digital divide in Pakistan, aligning with its broader goals under the Ministry of IT and Telecom.
