Islamabad: In a significant step to bolster immunization efforts across Pakistan, UNICEF has donated seven mobile vehicles to the Federal Directorate of Immunization (FDI). These vehicles are aimed at improving access to vaccines in remote regions, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Press Information Department, the handover ceremony took place at the FDI, with key health officials highlighting the critical role these 4×4 vehicles will play in overcoming accessibility challenges. Special Secretary Health, Mr. Mirza Nasir Ud Din Mashhood Ahmad, emphasized the importance of vaccination as a top priority for the government. He expressed gratitude to UNICEF and GAVI for their support in acquiring the vehicles and enhancing the outreach of immunization services.
Dr. Shabana Saleem, Director General of Health and FDI, stressed the necessity of ensuring vaccines reach every child, regardless of their location. She acknowledged UNICEF’s continued support, underscoring that these vehicles will significantly strengthen outreach capacities. Dr. Gunter Boussery, Chief of Health at UNICEF, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s underserved communities through these efforts.
This initiative, supported by financial backing from GAVI and other donors, aims to close immunization gaps and deliver essential services to vulnerable populations. The newly acquired Toyota Hilux vehicles will complement previous efforts, following an earlier transfer of 23 mobile units to various regions in November 2021. The vehicles are part of a broader strategy to enhance service delivery and target zero-dose children in underserved areas.
Mr. Zafar Iqbal Channa, Director Technical at FDI, noted that this event marks another milestone in strengthening Pakistan’s immunization infrastructure. The collaboration between UNICEF, the Federal Directorate of Immunization, and other partners is crucial in making vaccines accessible to every child in the country.
