UNGA Passes Pakistan-Backed Resolution Affirming Right to Self-Determination

Karachi, The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has approved a Pakistan-sponsored resolution reaffirming the right to self-determination for peoples under colonial, foreign, or alien occupation. This resolution, notably concerning regions such as Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine, was adopted by consensus.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the resolution was initially recommended by the UNGA’s Third Committee, which focuses on social, humanitarian, and cultural issues. Pakistan has consistently presented this resolution since 1981, aiming to draw international attention to the ongoing struggles for self-determination in areas like Indian-occupied Kashmir and Palestine.

Garnering the support of 64 countries, the resolution calls for an immediate cessation of foreign military interventions and occupations. It explicitly opposes acts of repression, discrimination, and maltreatment, emphasizing the suppression of peoples’ right to self-determination and other human rights in various parts of the world. The resolution demands that responsible states immediately halt their military interventions and occupations, along with all acts of repression and discrimination.

The UNGA expressed deep concern over the plight of millions of refugees and displaced persons, a direct consequence of these interventions and occupations. It reaffirmed their right to return to their homes safely and with dignity. Additionally, the resolution called upon the UN Human Rights Council to pay special attention to human rights violations, especially the right to self-determination, arising from foreign military interventions, aggressions, or occupations.

The Pakistan mission to the UN, in a press release, highlighted the resolution’s significance. It stated that the adoption of this resolution underscores the inherent right of peoples in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Indian-occupied Kashmir to self-determination, as guaranteed by international law, the UN Charter, and numerous UN resolutions. The mission emphasized that this resolution would bolster the aspirations of those in Occupied Palestinian Territories and Indian-occupied Kashmir in their pursuit of their inalienable right to self-determination.

In conclusion, the resolution requested the UN Secretary General to present a report on this matter at the next session of the General Assembly.
