UNESCO Director-General Calls for Justice in Somali Journalist’s Killing

Mogadishu, Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, has publicly decried the murder of Somali journalist Abdikarin Ahmed Bulhan, advocating for a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible.

According to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Azoulay condemned the violent act that took Bulhan’s life in the Abudwak district of Somalia’s Galmudug region on March 13, 2024. She underscored the crucial role journalists like Bulhan play in society, emphasizing that they should never become targets of violence. Abdikarin Ahmed Bulhan, a distinguished journalist for Somali National Television and a respected figure in humanitarian and peace initiatives within Abudwaq and the broader Galmudug State, met his demise through gunfire at his place of work.

In her statement, Azoulay called upon local authorities to rigorously investigate Bulhan’s killing and to bring the culprits to justice, highlighting UNESCO’s ongoing efforts to enhance the safety of journalists worldwide and combat the issue of impunity.
