UNDP and Partners Set Path for Pakistan’s Low-Emission Development

Islamabad: A key workshop convened by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with German development cooperation and UNICEF, alongside Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change and Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, has laid the groundwork for Pakistan’s strategy towards achieving a decarbonized economy. The session marked a significant move towards formulating Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) with about 250 stakeholders from diverse sectors aligning on a joint work plan.

According to United Nations Development Programme, the workshop was highlighted by discussions on strategic pathways to decarbonization, focusing on integrating public and private efforts to reach national net-zero emissions goals. Insights from Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the PM on Climate Change, and other key government figures underscored the critical need for collaborative approaches in this transformative journey.

The meeting also featured sessions on scenario modeling and strategic planning, essential for navigating towards sustainable development. Gender-focused discussions emphasized the pivotal role of women in this transition, showcasing success stories from green entrepreneurs who are contributing to climate solutions and sustainable livelihoods.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Wolfgang Hesse from GIZ reiterated Germany’s support for Pakistan’s climate initiatives under the Paris Agreement, stressing the importance of a just transition to renewable energy and a sustainable future.
