Islamabad, As the world marks United Nations Day, Kashmiris await the implementation of the UN resolutions that call for a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir. Despite being on the UN’s agenda for over seven decades, the Kashmir dispute remains unresolved, with recent actions by the Indian government intensifying concerns around the violation of these resolutions.
According to a news release by Kashmir Media Service, a report published today highlighted the fact that while the UN celebrates its 78th founding anniversary, India continues to dismiss Security Council resolutions pertaining to Kashmir. The report underscores that the Kashmir dispute stands as the oldest issue on the UN’s agenda, and the United Nations is duty-bound to see through its resolutions that affirm Kashmiris’ rights for a free and fair referendum. In particular, the BJP-led Indian government’s actions on 5th August 2019, described as “brutal, undemocratic, and unconstitutional,” contravene UN resolutions on the region.
Furthermore, the lingering nature of the Kashmir dispute brings the UN’s credibility into question, as resolving it remains the organization’s responsibility. The report advocates that achieving a resolution based on UN mandates is vital for ensuring peace and stability within South Asia, and emphasizes the global community’s role in supporting the Kashmiri struggle for their UN-sanctioned right to self-determination.
In a related development, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference’s constituent members, which include Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Political Movement, Jammu and Kashmir Freedom Front, and Jammu and Kashmir Employees Movement, released a joint statement in Srinagar. The statement expressed deep concern over India’s consistent violation of the UN Security Council’s resolutions on Kashmir. These parties urged the UN and the international community to actively participate in settling this protracted conflict, echoing the desires of the Kashmiri people.
