UN statement on Khurram Parvez’s arrest unnerves India

New Delhi, December 02, 2021 (PPI-OT):The ‘deep concern’ expressed by the United Nations over the arrest of leading Kashmiri human rights defender, Khurram Parvez, by India in occupied Jammu and Kashmir has baffled India.

In response to the statement made by the spokesperson of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the arrest of Khurram Parvez and other rights violations by Indian forces in Jammu and Kashmir, New Delhi on Thursday termed the comments as ‘adverse’, saying the statement “betrays” a complete lack of understanding of the security challenges in the region.

The OHCHR spokesperson, Rupert Colville, in a statement issued in Geneva on Wednesday voiced deep concern over the detention of Khurram Parvez and said, “We are unaware of the factual basis of the charges. He is known as a tireless advocate for families of the disappeared and has been targeted before for his human rights work.”

The statement of the OHCHR spokesperson has forced Indian Ministry of External Affairs to clarify BJP government’s position by saying that “authorities in India act against violations of law and not against legitimate exercise of rights.” The Indian External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, said, the OHCHR made “baseless and unfounded” allegations against law enforcement authorities and security forces of India.
