Karachi, On the International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members, the United Nations Secretary-General issued a poignant message highlighting the perilous conditions under which UN personnel operate globally. The day serves as a stark reminder of the dangers these individuals face, including violence, detention, and abduction, as they endeavor to assist those in need across conflict-ridden and disaster-struck regions.
According to United Nations Pakistan, since 2022, a total of 381 UN personnel have been detained, with 7 of these detentions occurring in January and February of this year alone. Currently, 27 UN personnel remain in detention. The Secretary-General expressed deep concern for their well-being and extended his support to their families and colleagues, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to securing their release and safe return.
The message also underscored the collective responsibility of countries to adhere to international conventions designed to protect UN staff and associated personnel. Specifically, it called for the full implementation of the 1994 Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel, along with the 2005 Optional Protocol to the Convention. These instruments are vital for ensuring the safety and security of those who are at the forefront of delivering aid, upholding human rights, and promoting peace and international law under the most challenging circumstances.
The Secretary-General’s message concluded with a call to honor the bravery and dedication of humanitarians worldwide. It urged the global community to pledge their support for these individuals, enabling them to continue their essential work towards building a more peaceful and humane world for all.
