New York: The United Nations honored fifty-seven peacekeepers from thirty-two countries, including two from Pakistan, for their sacrifices in the line of duty last year. The ceremony coincided with the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
The event commemorated the fallen peacekeepers through the posthumous awarding of Dag Hammarskjold medals. Among the recipients were Sepoy Muhammad Tarique and Havildar Ahsan Ullah Khan, who served with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, attended the ceremony. He was joined by the Mission’s Military Adviser, Col. Umar Shafique, as well as other heads of missions and military attaches, to accept the awards on behalf of the fallen peacekeepers.
The ceremony underscored the contributions and sacrifices of peacekeepers worldwide, emphasizing the global collaboration in pursuit of peace.
