UN Raises Alarm on Human Rights Violations in Manipur, Calls for Action

New York: The United Nations has raised significant concerns regarding the escalating ethnic riots and human rights abuses in Manipur, India. The global body highlighted the urgent need for the Indian government to intervene and protect the rights of its citizens, particularly religious minorities who have been disproportionately affected.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the UN report condemned the widespread violence and targeted attacks against religious minorities in Manipur, drawing attention to a broader pattern of neglect and abuse across the country. The report criticizes India’s historical silence on such issues, including previous incidents like the 2002 anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat and various extrajudicial killings.

The United Nations has pointed out the specific destruction of places of worship and private homes, which has significantly intensified communal tensions in the region. The report also noted the absence of decisive actions against government officials who have perpetuated hate speech and incited violence. Despite the severity of accusations, including rape and other violent crimes during the riots, the Indian government’s response has been notably lackluster, with no clear action plan to address these atrocities.

This situation has led to repeated calls from the international community for India to implement effective measures to ensure the protection of all its citizens and to hold accountable those responsible for these human rights violations.
