New York: The United Nations observed the first International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica, acknowledging its failure and honoring the victims of the atrocity, which remains the worst in Europe since the Second World War.
According to United Nations Pakistan, Secretary-General emphasized the importance of remembering the over 8,000 Bosnian Muslims who were killed and the need for ongoing support for the survivors and the families of the victims in their pursuit of truth and justice. He condemned any attempts at denial or revisionism of the genocide and underscored the commitment to identifying all victims and holding perpetrators accountable. The Secretary-General also reiterated the commitment to learning from the tragedy, promoting human rights, and fostering mutual understanding and reconciliation, aiming to ensure that such atrocities are never repeated and that the promise of “never again” is upheld.
