UN Human Rights Chief Begins Official Visit to Democratic Republic of the Congo

Kinshasa, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has commenced his official visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) today, which will run through April 18, 2024. The visit, hosted by the government, includes a series of significant meetings aimed at discussing human rights issues within the country.

According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, during his stay, Turk is scheduled to meet with President Felix Tshisekedi, various senior government officials, and other key stakeholders including civil society representatives, the National Human Rights Commission, political party members, and the diplomatic community in Kinshasa. Furthermore, his itinerary includes travel to the eastern part of the DRC, where he will visit camps for internally displaced people and engage with human rights defenders and civil society organizations.

The visit is expected to culminate in a news conference on Thursday, April 18, where Turk will discuss his observations and the outcomes of his discussions. Details regarding the time and location of the conference will be provided locally.
