Geneva, The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed serious concerns over attempts by Guatemala’s Attorney General’s Office to undermine the results of the general election. His alarm highlights a deepening crisis in the Central American country, where the democratic process and the will of the voters are being called into question.
According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, High Commissioner Türk condemned recent actions aimed at nullifying the general election results and challenging the constitutionality of the Movimiento Semilla party. He labeled these actions as “extremely disturbing” and stressed that judicial harassment and intimidation against electoral officers and elected officials were unacceptable.
Türk commended the resilience of the Guatemalan people who, despite numerous judicial and political maneuvers to compromise the electoral process, have stood up for their rights and opposed what they perceive as a usurpation of their political will. He emphasized the importance of preserving and respecting all human rights, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
The High Commissioner called on Guatemalan authorities, including the current President and the judiciary, to take action to preserve the rule of law and respect the electoral outcome. He underscored the critical need to safeguard democracy and human rights in Guatemala, echoing a widespread call for accountability and adherence to democratic principles.
This development places Guatemala’s political situation in the international spotlight, with significant implications for its democratic integrity and the protection of human rights within the country.
