Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict in Gaza, citing severe humanitarian crises due to intensified Israeli airstrikes and massive civilian displacements.
According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Turk detailed the dire circumstances following evacuation orders that have displaced over 278,000 people in Rafah since May 6. The recent orders potentially affect close to a million residents, leaving them with nowhere safe to relocate as surrounding areas like Khan Younis are already devastated and under continuous attack.
The High Commissioner emphasized the severe implications of a possible full-scale offensive on Rafah, which he said would violate international humanitarian law and the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice. He also highlighted the critical shortages of fuel in Gaza, which are impeding essential services including hospital operations, food distribution, and emergency communications.
Turk urgently called for a ceasefire between Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups and stressed the importance of releasing all hostages. He urged all states with influence in the region to take immediate action to prevent further escalation and protect civilian lives.
