Roma, In a critical address to the Italian Senate’s Extraordinary Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk emphasized the urgent need to address global human rights violations, conflicts, and the challenges posed by climate change.
According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Türk’s speech outlined the grave situation worldwide, where escalating conflicts and human rights violations are driving displacement, hunger, and unprecedented humanitarian needs. He specifically mentioned the situations in Ukraine, Sudan, the Sahel, Myanmar, and the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, highlighting their devastating impact on civilians.
The High Commissioner stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of conflict and grievances, such as discrimination, inequality, corruption, and poor governance. He emphasized that effective conflict resolution, peace-sustaining efforts, and sustainable development must focus on resolving these underlying issues.
Türk also addressed the challenges of increasing racism and discrimination, particularly against women and girls, and the rise of hate speech and misinformation on digital platforms. He underlined the critical role of human rights in building resilient societies capable of navigating global turmoil.
The High Commissioner highlighted the need for strong cooperative leadership to overcome the politics of division, distraction, and deception. He called for justice, evidence-based governance, and a focus on interconnectedness and shared values to foster empathy and social harmony.
Türk commended Italy’s efforts in welcoming migrants and refugees and encouraged continued support for their integration. He also raised concerns about Italy’s detention practices for migrants and asylum-seekers and the treatment of ethnic minorities, particularly Roma, Sinti, and Camminanti people, Africans, and people of African descent.
