UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Addresses Grave Situation in Gaza

Geneva, The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, provided a harrowing account of the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, emphasizing the dire circumstances unfolding in Gaza. In his statement during the 55th session of the Human Rights Council, Türk detailed the catastrophic impact of the conflict on civilians, reporting over 100,000 casualties and expressing concern over potential war crimes committed by all parties involved.

According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Türk’s address highlighted the overwhelming scale of devastation in Gaza since early October, with more than 30,000 people killed and tens of thousands missing. The humanitarian crisis has been exacerbated by the displacement of the majority of Gaza’s population and the destruction of essential infrastructure, including hospitals. Türk condemned the attacks on civilians by both Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups, describing the situation as a “carnage” with severe long-term effects on the survivors.

The High Commissioner called for an immediate end to the hostilities, urging all parties to respect international human rights and humanitarian laws. He stressed the need for peace, investigation, and accountability, particularly highlighting the disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force that has rendered Gaza largely unlivable.

The statement also revisited the longstanding issues stemming from the Israeli occupation, including discriminatory policies against Palestinians and the blockade of the Gaza Strip, which has significantly deteriorated living conditions. Türk criticized the lack of international response to the transfer of arms to conflict parties, potentially enabling violations of international law.

Türk’s address covered the impact of the conflict on the West Bank as well, noting an increase in violence and unlawful killings by Israeli forces. He emphasized the urgency of ending the occupation and achieving peace based on mutual recognition and respect for human rights.

The High Commissioner concluded by calling for immediate actions to alleviate the humanitarian crisis, including the lifting of blockades and access to humanitarian aid. He underscored the necessity of acknowledging the humanity of all affected individuals to pave the way for lasting peace and justice in the region.
