Chicago, September 07, 2022 (PPI-OT):President of Washington-based World Kashmir Awareness Forum, Dr Ghulam N Mir, has regretted the failure of United Nations to implement its resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir that has led to continued suffering of the Kashmiri people.
Dr Ghulam N Mir was addressing a panel discussion at the 59th Annual Convention of Islamic Society of North America held in Chicago. The ISNA Convention was attended by more than 10,000 people who came from all across the US and Canada.
Dr Ghulam N Mir said that 75 years have passed since the British imperialists decolonized the subcontinent leaving the region divided and Kashmir invaded and occupied by India, as a result, Kashmiris were gripped with a never-ending cycle of state sponsored violence and terror.
He said that India had taken the Kashmir dispute to the UN Security Council in 1948 and the World Body had passed several resolutions calling for its settlement by holding a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir. “Unfortunately, the UNSC’s monumental failure to force India to hold a plebiscite in Kashmir has led to three wars between India and Pakistan and enormous human suffering over the last 75 years. The region’s future remains in peril with three nuclear powers – India, Pakistan and China standing face to face with each other,” he added.
Dr Ghulam N Mir maintained that illegal actions taken by the Indian government on and after August 05, 2019 have further complicated the situation in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He said ever since, the Modi regime is hell bent upon changing the demographic complexion of the occupied territory.
He called for resolving the Kashmir dispute by giving the Kashmiri people their right to self-determination as per the UNSC resolutions. He demanded withdrawal of Indian troops from IIOJK and release of Kashmiri detainees languishing in different jails of IIOJK and India. He also urged New Delhi to rescind its illegal unconstitutional move of repealing the special status of IIOJK and withdraw all laws passed or implemented by it in pursuit of a settler-colonialist project in the territory.
