UN Committee Highlights Dire Situation for Children in Sudan Conflict

Geneva, A UN committee reports a dire crisis for children in Sudan, where ongoing armed conflict has exposed 24 million children to severe violations of their basic rights. The conflict, now a year in duration, has led to significant disruptions in education, healthcare, and basic survival needs, with millions of children displaced and at risk of malnutrition.

According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has documented extensive harm to children in Sudan, including killings, displacement, and recruitment into armed forces. The Committee’s findings indicate a catastrophic impact on the young generation’s future, with millions lacking access to education or adequate healthcare and many facing acute malnutrition. The situation is described as the world’s largest child displacement crisis, exacerbated by widespread destruction of healthcare facilities and schools.

The Committee urgently calls on Sudan to halt child recruitment by armed forces, address violations of children’s rights, and engage with international efforts to resolve the conflict and ensure accountability for crimes committed. The global community is urged to increase support and funding to avert further loss of young lives and safeguard the future of Sudan’s children.
