Islamabad, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the head of UN Peacekeeping Operations, has commended the Pakistani peacekeepers for their significant efforts in maintaining peace and stability in the tumultuous region of Abyei. During interactions with the peacekeepers serving with the U.N. Interim Security Force for Abyei, Lacroix highlighted the universal desire for peace among nations and honored the sacrifices made by Pakistan Army soldiers.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Lacroix’s visit included a tribute to the fallen soldiers, where he laid a floral wreath at the martyrs’ monument and observed a minute of silence in their memory. The Unit Commander of the Pakistani peacekeepers provided an overview of the various initiatives undertaken to foster peace and stability in the area, including the pivotal role of the battalion’s female staff in healthcare and peacekeeping duties.
Furthermore, Lacroix reflected on his recent visit to the Wahga border near Lahore, where he was briefed on Pakistan’s efforts towards promoting religious harmony, notably through the establishment of the Kartarpur Corridor. Expressing a keen interest, the special envoy indicated a personal desire to visit the Corridor.
The dedication of Pakistani peacekeepers to UN missions worldwide was underscored by the mention of 181 Pakistani soldiers who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, showcasing Pakistan’s commitment to global peacekeeping efforts.
