UN and China Collaborate to Upgrade School for Girls in Quetta


Quetta, The Government Girls High School (GGHS) in Killi Qambrani, District Quetta, celebrated the inauguration of its newly renovated facilities today, marking a significant advancement in educational infrastructure for the region. This project was spearheaded by the UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Director for Asia and the Pacific, Ms. Kanni Wignaraja.



According to United Nations Development Programme, the renovation of GGHS is part of a larger initiative that targets the refurbishment of 43 schools across four districts in Balochistan, with the goal of enhancing educational access for over 8,000 students, mainly girls. The project received substantial support from the Chinese International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) and was facilitated by UNDP.



The ceremony was attended by notable figures including Dr. Samuel Rizk, UNDP Pakistan Resident Representative, and Mr. Arif Hussain Shah, Joint Chief Economist of the Planning and Development Department of Balochistan. The event was also marked by the presence of school administration, faculty, and students, who expressed their gratitude towards the contributors.



Ms. Fareeda Qazi, Principal of GGHS, warmly welcomed the delegates and guests, acknowledging the profound impact of the renovation. The improvements at the school include new solar energy systems, upgraded furniture, refurbished classrooms, and colorful wall paintings, all of which have significantly enriched the learning environment for the 850 girls studying at GGHS.



During his address, Mr. Arif Hussain Shah emphasized the Balochistan government’s dedication to advancing education, particularly for girls, highlighting education as a pivotal element in the province’s developmental strategy.



Ms. Wignaraja discussed the critical need for investing in girls’ education in Balochistan, pointing out its potential to empower young women both socially and economically. She praised the resilience and commitment of the school’s staff in providing quality education despite numerous challenges.



The event concluded with a tour of the school gallery, which displayed artworks created by the students, showcasing their creativity and the positive effects of the enhanced educational facilities.
