Karachi, In collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Government of Pakistan and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) launched Phase II of their project to enhance Pakistan’s maritime security capabilities against drug and contraband trafficking.

According to United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, this joint initiative, known as the ‘Improved National Response against Drugs and Contraband Trafficking in the Maritime Domain (Phase II)’, was inaugurated at a ceremony with notable attendees including Rear Admiral Imtiaz Ali of the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, and Andrew Schofer, Chargé d’affaires of the United States Mission in Pakistan. This 12-month project aims to bolster Pakistan’s efforts in managing its borders and enhancing law enforcement capabilities at sea.

Dr. Jeremy Milsom, UNODC COPAK representative, emphasized the holistic approach of the initiative, which aims to foster both domestic and international partnerships to tackle drug trafficking effectively. Phase II will focus on enhancing interagency coordination and cooperation with regional counterparts, as well as increasing the operational capabilities of Pakistani maritime law enforcement agencies.

The launch event also featured discussions on the strategic importance of maritime security and the shared global interests in stabilizing regions affected by narcotic trafficking. Rear Admiral Imtiaz Ali highlighted Pakistan’s geographical challenges and its role as a critical barrier against drug flow from Afghanistan. CDA Andrew Schofer reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s maritime security efforts, underlining the longstanding security cooperation between the two nations.

The project launch was followed by a roundtable discussion reviewing threats, achievements of the earlier phase, and strategies for future collaboration.
