Washington: President Donald Trump has criticized Harvard University, labeling it a “joke” and suggesting that the prestigious institution should lose its government research contracts. The criticism follows Harvard’s refusal to accept outside political supervision, leading to threats from the Trump Administration.
The administration has further threatened to prohibit Harvard from admitting foreign students unless it complies with new requirements. Reports indicate that officials are considering the possibility of revoking Harvard’s tax-exempt status, adding to the tension between the university and the government.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, President Trump remarked, “Harvard can no longer be considered even a decent place of learning, and should not be considered on any list of the world’s great universities or colleges.” He added that the university “teaches hate and stupidity” and should not continue to receive federal funds.
The Department of Homeland Security has also taken action by canceling $2.7 million worth of research grants previously awarded to Harvard. Additionally, the department has threatened the university’s capability to enroll international students unless it provides records related to visa-holders’ alleged “illegal and violent activities.”
These developments come as the administration and Harvard are at an impasse, with significant implications for the university’s funding and international student enrollment.
