Tributes to Dr. Farooq Ashai Highlight His Contributions and Sacrifice for Kashmir

Islamabad, Mehmood Ahmed Saghar, the convener of APHC-AJK, has commemorated Dr. Farooq Ahmad Ashai, acknowledging his significant contributions and ultimate sacrifice for the Kashmir cause. Dr. Ashai, remembered as a distinguished son of the soil, is celebrated for his dedication and the price he paid in pursuit of justice for Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Kashmir community marks a somber anniversary on February 18, commemorating the loss of Prof. Farooq Ashai, a leading figure in orthopedics and a vocal advocate for civilian rights in the region. Dr. Ashai was tragically killed by Indian forces in 1993, a loss that has resonated through the decades. At the time of his death, he served as the Head of the Department of Orthopedics at Medical College Srinagar and was the chief orthopedic surgeon at the Bone and Joint Hospital, a facility he founded in Srinagar.

Prof. Ashai is revered for his pioneering work in orthopedics in Kashmir, earning him the title of the father of the field in the region. His commitment extended beyond the medical field as he actively engaged with international journalists and human rights organizations, representing the plight of injured civilians in occupied Kashmir during the early 1990s.

Saghar highlighted the circumstances of Dr. Ashai’s martyrdom as a stark illustration of the ongoing oppression faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The brutal manner of his death at the hands of Indian forces remains a poignant reminder of the struggle for freedom and justice in the region.
