Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif marked the third death anniversary of Syed Ali Gilani, a revered Kashmiri leader, by honoring his enduring struggle for the rights of the people in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The commemoration took place on Sunday, highlighting Gilani’s impactful legacy and ongoing influence on the Kashmiri self-determination movement.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Syed Ali Gilani, whose rallying cry “We are Kashmiris and Pakistan is our country” continues to resonate with millions, passed away on September 1, 2021, following a prolonged period of house arrest at his residence in Srinagar. President Zardari praised Gilani as a symbol of hope and resistance, motivating numerous Kashmiris to persist in their quest for self-determination. “His tireless efforts and sacrifices for the just cause of the Kashmiri people will forever be etched in our hearts and minds,” stated President Zardari. He emphasized that despite facing numerous incarcerations and house arrests by Indian forces, Gilani’s spirit remained unbroken, consistently advocating for the rights of people in IIOJK.
President Zardari further remarked on Gilani’s unwavering commitment to the Kashmiri cause, “Gilani sahib remained focused on the ultimate goal, and never allowed the attention of the Kashmiri people to be diverted from the pursuit of their fundamental right to self-determination.” He assured continued support for the Kashmiri cause, aligning with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Similarly, Prime Minister Shehbaz paid homage to Gilani, reiterating Pakistan’s ongoing moral, diplomatic, and political support to the Kashmiri people. The PM Office media wing quoted him saying, “Remembering Gilani, the premier stated that his name would always be remembered and respected in the movement for the freedom of IIOJK.” He acknowledged Gilani’s lifelong dedication to the Kashmiri self-determination and highlighted that the hardships endured, including imprisonment, never deterred Gilani’s resolve. “His sacrifices would not go in vain,” affirmed PM Shehbaz, committing to continue the struggle for self-determination.
The tributes reflect the high regard and respect held for Gilani’s contributions towards the Kashmiri movement, underscoring his role as a pivotal figure in the ongoing struggle for rights and self-determination in the region.
